How to match subwoofers and amplifiers
Find the right amp for your sub or sub for your amp

The secret to great bass is making sure your subwoofers and amp are evenly matched and will properly work together. And this article will help you figure out how to do just that — match amplifiers and subwoofers.
Getting the right sub for an amp, or the right amp for a sub, is like solving a puzzle. A subwoofer has impedance (measured in ohms) which represents the "load" an amplifier will sense on its output. An amplifier will put out different amounts of power (watts RMS) based on the impedance load it "sees."
Solving the puzzle
The amplifier's capabilities (X watts RMS into Y ohms) needs to match the subwoofer's specifications (Y ohms and can handle X watts RMS). Your goal is to get those two variables to match for both the amplifier and the subwoofer.
Below, we cover the important basics of power-matching, impedance, and planning for the number of subs you want, and we approach the situation from both sides of the system:
- Part A: You have the subs, which amp should you get?
- Part B: You have the amp, which subs should you get?
- And also, Part C: You have neither amp nor sub, and want help deciding how to begin.
Start with either part you want, but A and B are both worth a read.
Part A — You have the subs, which amplifier should you get?
The subwoofers need to be the same
Multiple subs wired together must be the same coil type and impedance. If they’re not, the power won’t divide evenly between them, and some subs would probably be over-powered while others get under-powered. If you want to run different types of subs in a system, each type needs to have its own separate amp.
Step 1: How much power? Find out the “watts RMS” rating of the sub
Then, multiply the number of subs you have by the RMS rating of each, to get their total RMS rating. You want to make sure the amp you choose will supply no more than the sub system’s total RMS rating.
Step 2: What impedance? The results of combining coils and subs
Figure out the possible total impedance(s) that the subs can be wired together to form.
(SVC = single voice coil, 1 pair of terminals; DVC = dual voice coil, 2 pairs of terminals.)
- 1 SVC 2-ohms can only have 2 ohms of impedance
- 1 SVC 4-ohms can only have 4 ohms of impedance
- 1 DVC 2-ohms can have 1 ohm or 4 ohms of impedance
- 1 DVC 4-ohms can have 2 ohms or 8 ohms of impedance
- 2 SVC 2-ohms can have 1 ohm or 4 ohms of impedance
- 2 SVC 4-ohms can have 2 ohms or 8 ohms of impedance
- 2 DVC 2-ohms can have 2 ohms or 8 ohms of impedance
- 2 DVC 4-ohms can have 1 ohm or 4 ohms of impedance
- 3 SVC 2-ohms can have 6 ohms of impedance
- 3 SVC 4-ohms can have 1.3 ohms of impedance
- 3 DVC 2-ohms can have 1.3 ohms or 3 ohms of impedance
- 3 DVC 4-ohms can have 2.7 ohms or 6 ohms of impedance
- 4 SVC 2-ohms can have 2 ohms or 8 ohms of impedance
- 4 SVC 4-ohms can have 1 ohm or 4 ohms of impedance
- 4 DVC 2-ohms can have 1 ohm or 4 ohms of impedance
- 4 DVC 4-ohms can have 2 ohms or 8 ohms of impedance
For more combinations of subs and their impedances, see Subwoofer Wiring Diagrams.
Step 3: Pick an amp that can do both — X watts at Y ohms
Look for an amplifier that can put out power up to the RMS wattage you’ve figured in Step 1, at an impedance load the subs can be wired to form, from Step 2.
Estimating amp power at the odd impedance values:
- 8 ohms — figure on the amp putting out half the power it would at 4 ohms
- 6 ohms — figure on the amp putting out three-quarters of the power it would at 4 ohms
- 3 ohms — figure on the amp putting out the average of what it would at 2 ohms and at 4 ohms
- 2.7 ohms — figure the same as for 3 ohms, and add a few watts
- 1.3 ohms — use the 1-ohm spec and take away a few watts

Example:
You have two Alpine Type R SWR-8D4 8" subwoofers and you want the right amp for them.
They are DVC 4-ohm subs rated at 350 watts RMS each.
Two 350 watts RMS subs together need a total of 700 watts RMS.
Using the chart in Step 2, 2 DVC 4-ohm subs can be wired together to form a 1-ohm, a 4-ohm, or a 16-ohm load.
The last is too high a load to be practical, so you’ll look for an amp that can put out up to 700 watts RMS into either a 4-ohm load, or a 1-ohm impedance load:
- up to 700 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms, or
- up to 700 watts RMS x 1 at 1 ohm
Among Crutchfield’s selection of amplifiers you’ll find:
- Memphis Audio PRXA600.1 — 600 watts RMS x 1 at 1 ohm
- JL Audio Slash 600/1v3 — 600 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
- Rockford Fosgate Power T1000-1bdCP — 700 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
Any one of these high-quality amplifiers would work well with those subs. It doesn’t matter which impedance an amp plays through — 600 watts RMS through a 4-ohm load produces the same volume as 600 watts RMS through a 1-ohm load.

Rockford Fosgate T1000-1bdCP subwoofer amplifier

JL Audio Slash 600/1v3 subwoofer amplifier
Part B — You have the amplfier, which subs should you get?
Step 1: What can the amp do? Find the RMS ratings of the amp at different loads
Find the amp’s power, expressed in “watts RMS”, at 4 ohms, at 2 ohms, and, if it can, at 1 ohm. Pick the power you’d like to achieve. The load impedance (ohms) of that rating will be what you want your subs’ total impedance to be.
Step 2: How many subs do you want?
Divide the power you picked in Step 1 by the number of subs you want. This number is the target RMS rating for each of the subs you’ll choose.
Step 3: What impedance does each sub need to be and how many voice coils?
Using the impedance you picked in Step 1 and the number of subs from Step 2, cross-reference the possible coil configurations that you can use:
1-ohm | 2-ohms | 4-ohms | |
1 sub | DVC 2-ohms | SVC 2-ohms DVC 4 ohms | SVC 4-ohms DVC 2-ohms |
2 subs | SVC 2-ohms DVC 4-ohms | SVC 4-ohms DVC 2-ohms | SVC 2-ohms DVC 4-ohms |
3 subs | (1.3 ohms)* SVC 4-ohms DVC 2-ohms | (3 or 2.7 ohms)* DVC 2-ohms DVC 4-ohms | (6 ohms)* SVC 2-ohms DVC 4-ohms |
4 subs | SVC 4-ohms DVC 2-ohms | SVC 2-ohms DVC 4 ohms | SVC 4-ohms DVC 2-ohms |
Step 4: Pick a sub that works for both — (SVC or DVC) X-ohms, Y watts RMS)
Look for subs that are rated at the wattage you figured in Step 2, and are configured as you found in Step 3. This might sound confusing, so let's walk through an example and it'll make sense.

Example:
You have a Memphis Audio SRX500D.1 amplifier and you want it to drive two subwoofers
The amp is capable of 350 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms and 500 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms.
Let’s say you choose to maximize the amp’s potential and want the system to put out 500 watts RMS. This means your subs have to be wired to form a total impedance of 2 ohms.
Two subs on a 500 watts RMS amp will want about 250 watts RMS each.
So you’ll look for subs each rated for 250 watts RMS or more.
Using the chart in Step 3, for two subwoofers, a final 2-ohm load can be achieved with either two SVC 4-ohm subs or two DVC 2-ohm subs.
So, you’ll look for two subs that are either SVC 4-ohms or DVC 2-ohms, rated for at least 250 watts RMS each:
- 2 SVC 4-ohms, at least 250 watts RMS, or
- 2 DVC 2-ohms, at least 250 watts RMS
Among Crutchfield’s selection of subwoofers you’ll find:
- Alpine W10S4 10" — SVC 4-ohm, 250 watts RMS
- Memphis PRX124 12" — SVC 4-ohm, 300 watts RMS
- JL Audio 12W0v3-4 12" — SVC 4-ohm, 300 watts RMS
- Kicker 44CWCS104 — SVC 4-ohm, 300 watts RMS
- Rockford Fosgate R2D2-10 10" — DVC 2-ohms, 250 watts RMS

Kicker CompC 10" component subwoofer
All these subwoofers will sound their best when amplified with the proper amount of power. Differences in size have more to do with tonal qualities and frequency response than with power performance. And optimizing performance is the point of matching subs and amps together.

Hello, I currently have a JL Audio JD1000/1 Amplifier. The specs are as follows: Rated Continuous (RMS) Power @ 14.4 V @ 4 O 600 W RMS x 1 @ 3 O 800 W RMS x 1 @ 2 O 1000 W RMS x 1 @ 1.5 O N/A Rated Continuous (RMS) Power @ 12.5 V @ 4 O 500 W RMS x 1 @ 3 O 650 W RMS x 1 @ 2 O 800 W RMS x 1 @ 1.5 O N/A How do I know if I am using 14.4V or 12.5V? Also, I am trying to pair it with a Kicker CompQ 12" which comes in a 2ohm and 4ohm option and they are both rated for 850 watts RMS. Both have dual voice coils. What would be the best router to go in order to get the most power out of my amp and sub without overpowering or underpowering it too much? Thank you for your help.

I have a Picasso Soundstream Nano P640d with a dedicated sub-channel pushing 350W @ 2ohms. I know a lot of folks like to overpower subs, but my question is: if I'm looking for a healthy mix of pressure & quality, should I look for a sub that is rated for close to 350W, or should I go for something rated lower and overpower it slightly? Is a lower-rated (RMS wise) sub going to be louder with 350W than a sub rated for 350? I'm also wary to buy a sub that is rated for more power than my amp puts out, as I know I'll want more power and end up driving it too hard/dirtying up the signal and probably clip it. Any advice? Thank you!

I have the amp's gain turned down significantly but when I turn the sound up on certain basslines one of the speakers will make a popping noise. I'm trying to figure out if it's too much power causing it or not enough airspace in the box. The box is a front facing subs under the seat in a truck with the port facing the back passenger side door. The sub closest to the port is the one making the popping noise so I figured it might be the airspace but not sure

Hi, I have a 12W1v3-2 by JL AUDIO fitted into the FJ Cruiser Stealthbox housing. According to JL Audio it pushes 300 watts wired 2 ohm mono. I currently have a RD500/1 by FL Audio accompanying the sub. My sub blew out recently, and it's been replaced as of 5 days ago. I had the sub-woofer serviced prior to it blowing out since it was cutting "in and out" of sound. My local audio place assured me it was the gain coming out of the amplifier so they turned it up on their own terms. I believe the sub blew because they started to clip once the audio place turned the gain up. I got the new sub-woofer placed in the box and I'm getting the same cutting when I experience road turbulence or making a turn. Power seems to phase in and out of strength as well without completely shutting down as a turn/turbulence would. Am I receiving too little power? Is a fuse blown? Ground connection? Wire connection? Voltage? Not too sure, hate to present such a complex issue but I wish that your solution helps.

I recently purchased two ts-swx2002 8in subs. If I've read the specs correctly they should both be DVC 2ohm a piece (though one site rated impedance at 4ohm) as well as 150w RMS a piece. Going off the examples given above, I would want to look in the 240 - 360 watt range correct? Also if I'm pairing them with a set of Kappa62ix speakers, which based on reviews on Crutchfield I'll get the best out of them when paired with an amp. Do I need to accommodate the size of my amp or would the above range of amp still be appropriate?

I have 2 JL Audio 12TW3-D8 wired for a 2 Ohm Final Impedance @ 800W RMS in a JL Audio Stealthbox. I have a Rockford Fosgate Prime 1200.1D that does 800W RMS @ 2 Ohm ( though it's closer to 880W on a dyno). Is this enough wattage for this setup or should I look for something larger? The bass sounds amazing in my 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab but outside the vehicle the bass doesn't seem that loud at all. So just wondering if I need to step up the size of the amp or am I just being picky?

I never heard of this brand but with a little research lol I think they're pretty powerful@ 500 watts rms, not sure if that's true but I have an ARC AUDIO FD2200 AMP pushing them, and they hit! But my amp gets hot sort of quick which prevents me from turning the gain up high. I have the speakers wired in parallel to one channel. Curious...is this the right set up with what I have. I just purchased a truck 2 days ago with a Pyle power pla4478 4 Ch 4000 Watts Bridgeable Mosfet Amplifier. It has two Kicker CompD 8 Inch 4 Ohm Subwoofers in a box under the seat, it was utilizing. I noticed a weird smell when I purchased the truck, but got side tracked with the excitement and additional features I was shown. Just today ((within 48 hours, and not messing with any of the radio settings)) the sub suddenly went silent. Later in the day I picked up a co worker who has done some light car audio and as soon as he got in my truck he said he could smell a speaker blown somewhere. We investigated and found only one to have the smell and some resistance when we gently pushed on it. When I got home I busted out my finances old ken wood sub just to see if it would power on. Nada. My friend says the owner of the truck, had way to much power for those little guys. I was wondering if this were accurate, and I'd also like to ask you Buck, what speakers would work/you'd recommend with this 4 Ch 4000 Watt Pyle. Thanks for doing this for all of us!

Hey Buck, Thanks for the Great article. I'm curious though, in "Part A - Example", you are multiplying the RMS value by 0.75 & 1.5 to get the minimum and maximum RMS values. 700 watts RMS 75%: 525 150%: 1050 But in "Part B - Example" you are dividing the RMS value by 0.75 & 1.5 to get the minimum and maximum RMS values. 250 watts RMS 75%: 167 150%: 333 The correct way to find the percent of a number would be to "multiply" the RMS value by the Percentage. Is there some specific reason why you chose to "divide" in Part B rather than "multiply"?

Matt, the sub you mention presents a 4-ohm load to the amp, so that won't maximize the amp's power. A better match would be a 2-ohm sub rated for between 300 and 500 watts RMS, like a Rockford Fosgate Prime R1-2X12.

Anthony, That 400 watts RMS at 2 ohms sub amp will work best with a sub rated for between 300 and 500 watts RMS and able to be wired as a 2-ohm load, like a Rockford Fosgate P2D4-12, wired like this.

Harry, Those subs are DVC 4-ohms and rated for 2500 watts RMS each. For a single amp to power them would take about 10,000 watts. A better way might be to use four 2500-watt amps, like Rockford Fosgate T2500bdCPs.

Alexander, A single DVC 4-ohm sub can only be wired as an 8-ohm or a 2-ohm load, so the best way to wire one to one of those amplifiers is like this diagram. The 400 watts RMS rated sub will handle 500 watts RMS just fine. Just make sure you set the amp gain so that no distortion plays.

I guess I am making this comment/question to pre-visualize what I will be encountering when I get my new subwoofers installed on the 21st of this month. I have purchased two JL Audio 10Tw3-4's each with an RMS rating of between up to 400w and are both 4 ohm dual V coils. The "optimal" green zone on JL's website is showing the 250watt area. .. and anything over 500watt is in the black zone symbolizing being not recommended. ..... I own two Alpine MRV 500/1 amps.. one for each JL sub...... To simplify though let's pretend at this point I have just one sub and one amp....... The amp will be providing 500w RMS at 2 ohm.. *OR* 300w RMS at 4 ohm. - The JL website "danger scale" is seemingly going against the overall agreement that having more power *available* is better for subs than under powered.... ... so would I be better giving the sub its native 4 ohm parameter and output at a 300w RMS level (which would be 100w under the subs top spec of a 400w RMS rating.) or am I going to be taking a risk dropping to 2 ohm and throwing the full 500w RMS at it? (which would be 100w OVER the subs top spec of a 400w RMS rating.) side note of interest: Nowadays I go for an all-around full concert sound versus my "Basshead" days of simply trying to anger people hundreds of feet away with constant low end, so what matters to me now is giving my system the BEST arrangements for the best and safest dynamics. Thanks for providing any advice you have. =) Alexander

Bryan, Two DVC 4-ohm subs get wired to an amp that can handle a 1-ohm load like this diagram. That 1200 watts RMS amp may be a bit much for those 420 watts rated subs, but they should be alright as long as you don't play distorted bass.

Philip, Although some amplifiers can be "strapped" together in pairs to double the power, you should never connect amplifier outputs together, it could cause damage to both amps. Not knowing exactly what amplifier or subwoofer you have make it impossible to give advice on how to wire them together. If you want a question answered about a system, you must identify the gear by brand names and model numbers.

Mark, 600 watts RMS is 240% of the RMS rating of your subs, so that amp will be a bit too much for them. You could probably use it, as long as you set the gain low enough to never play distortion.

Would a 600 watt rms amp be too much power for a pair of these subs? Can the 75 to 150 percent method be used from the 250 max rms rating?

Tony, A subwoofer acts like a passive inductive load with its impedance value measured in ohms. An amplifier will react differently to different loads - an amp that can put out 125 watts RMS through a 4-ohm load will often be able to put out twice that, 250 watts RMS, through a 2-ohm load. It's like lifting weights: your arms (the amplifier) don't change when you change weights (the load/ohms), but your effort and work output (the power/watts) do.

Thanks, Buck. Another quick question. When the amp says it can do either 125watts rms x 2 @ 4ohms or can do 250watts rms x 2 @ 2 ohms. How do you select for it to be the 2 ohms for both of the channels instead of the 4 ohms on each channel? Or is there no selection and it just automatically puts out a 2ohm load and a 4 ohm load per channel?

Tony, That gear will work well together. Wired like this diagram, the amp will put out 250 watts RMS to the 300 watts RMS rated sub. Then later, you can add a second sub wired like this, and have a 500 watts RMS subwoofer system.

Hello, I'm looking at purchasing (1) of these Polk Audio MM842DVC 8" Peak Power Handling - 900 Watts. RMS Power Handling - 300 Watts. Nominal Impedance - 4 Ohms. I may add a second one at a later date. This is the amp I'm thinking about getting to power the 8"sub with and would like to know if this would be an ok, setup. Polk Audio PA D2000.2 class D 2 Channel ratted at 125 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms or 250 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms or 500 watts RMS x 1 in bridged mode (4-ohm stable in bridged mode) would this setup be ok? Thanks.

Dillon, Pioneer makes single voice coil and dual voice coil 4-ohm 12-inch subwoofers. Without knowing precisely which subs you're referring to, we can't help you with advice. If you want a question answered about a system, you must identify the gear by model number as well as brand name so we can get the right information to you.

Kevin, If you want to optimize your amplifier's output, get either a SVC 2-ohm sub or a DVC 4-ohm sub rated between 533 and 1066 watts RMS, like an Alpine Type R-W12D4. You'd wire it like this diagram.

Tyler, That amplifier will probably blow that subwoofer to smithereens - it's three times more powerful than the sub's power rating. For running that sub, look for an amp that can put out between 75 and 150 watts RMS at 4-ohms, like a Rockford Fosgate R150X2 bridged to one-channel mode.

I had a sound system installed in my car with the following sound system parts: - AMP rated at 6900 Watts RMS, I don't know the impendence. - Two Subs each rated at 2000 Watts RMS, I don't know the impendence. Four days after installation the subs blew up. Using your guidelines for matching Subs and AMP, my calculation results reveal that an AMP rated between 3000 to 6000 Watts RMS would have been suitable for the 2000 Watts RMS Subs which I have. Similarly, Subs rated between 2300 to 4600 Watts RMS would have been suitable for the 6900 Watts RMS AMP that I have. I would like to know if the mismatch between the AMP and the Subs could have been the reasons for the Subs to blow up. Thanks

Ajith, That amplifier will require a power supply with a 12 to 14 volt DC, 60-ampere output. Then, it would require 4-gauge (6 mm) power and ground wires. A subwoofer rated between 400 and 800 watts RMS, either SVC 2-ohms or DVC 4-ohms will work best. Then, you'll need an enclosure for the sub to work properly. Seems like a lot of trouble and expense, instead of getting a home theater subwoofer designed to work in the home.

Thomason, I don't know anything about that amplifier, or even what audio gear is available in your country. It appears that two of your subs are DVC 2-ohm models and the other four are DVC 4-ohms. You should never connect subs of different impedances together to the same amplifier - the lower impedance subs will get more power than the higher impedance subs, resulting in unbalanced sound levels and potentially blown subs. Get two amplifiers for your two different types of subs.

Adrian, An 08DS12L72 is a single loaded enclosure with two 12-inch component subs with a total impedance of 2 ohms and a power rating of 1500 watts RMS. Changing from a 1500-watt amplifier to a 1000-watt amp will not improve the sound. Kon, That 300 watts RMS rated 4-ohm sub will work best with an amplifier that can put out between 225 and 450 watts RMS at 4 ohms. Unfortunately, the amplifier you mentioned, in spite of its specifications, will not be able to produce even that much power. A Class AB amp with a 30-amp fuse will not produce more than about 210 watts RMS. A better choice would be a JBL GTX500.

Michael, Your mono, 1-channel amplifier has 2 speaker output terminals that are wired together inside the amp. The second speaker output terminal is there for convenience and if you hook a sub to each terminal it would result in the two subs being wired in parallel, cutting the total impedance in half. If you wire a 2-ohm sub to each terminal, that amp would go into protect mode to prevent burning up. I suggest getting a second amp to drive your second sub.
