Car amplifier buying guide
Get the wattage and number of channels you need
When shopping for a car amplifier, there are a few basic questions that everyone has and a few use-cases that typically come up. This car amplifier buying guide will help answer those questions and get you started on the path to better car audio sound. We'll discuss:
- Why should I get an amplifier?
- Adding power to a factory stereo system
- How much power do aftermarket speakers need?
- How many channels should my amp have?
- How much power do I need for a subwoofer?
Why add an amplifier?
If you want your music to be loud, amplifiers are definitely part of the picture. But whether you run your system wide open or softly enough for conversation, a power amplifier will breathe life into your music, bringing out all of its excitement and detail. Here are a few of the main benefits of adding an amp:
- Better sound quality — Adding an amplifier gives you a clean power source that can drive your speakers without straining. Unlike an amplifier built into an in-dash stereo, an external power amp isn't limited by the space available — it can be designed without compromises. That means your music will sound cleaner and more defined at all volume levels.
- Power for upgraded speakers — A factory system or an in-dash receiver may not do justice to your upgraded speakers. If you're adding high-quality aftermarket speakers or component systems to your vehicle, they may require more power for peak performance than your existing in-dash receiver can provide.
- Powering a subwoofer — Subwoofers require significantly more power than a brand-name or factory in-dash receiver can provide. A separate amp is a necessity.

The compact Kenwood KAC-M1814 4-channel amplifier fits almost anywhere.
I want to add some oomph to a factory system
Standard factory car stereos usually have no more than about 10 watts RMS maximum output power per channel, in spite of what the car dealers advertise. That's usually not enough power to overcome road noise without sounding shrill.
A great way to upgrade your sound system without changing the factory look of your vehicle is to get a factory system upgrade. Each of these systems include an amplifier and other sound processing gear custom-designed for your specific vehicle that will vastly improve the sound and leave the interior looking stock.
A more economical way to upgrade your sound system without changing the factory stereo or speakers is to get a compact 4-channel amp to boost the power for your front and rear speakers. The Kenwood amp pictured above or the Alpine KTP-445U Power Pack are good examples of these small, 4-channel amps that are tiny enough to be installed behind many dashboards and powerful enough to dramatically increase the quality and clarity of your sound.
Look for speaker-level inputs
If you're adding the amplifier to a factory system, look for a model with "speaker-level inputs" as one of its features. These amplifiers can handle the high-level signal from the vehicle's factory speaker wiring, making it easier to install them without extra electronic components.
DIY Installation Help
Amplifiers don't come with the wiring you need to connect them to your stereo.
- Wiring kits provide everything you need to send signal and power to your amp.
- You'll also need speaker wire to send signal from your amp to your speakers.
- A capacitor stores reserve power and delivers it when your amp needs it most.
- And don't forget the extra hardware you might need for a truly professional installation: battery terminals, power distribution hardware, fuses, etc.
How much power do my aftermarket speakers need?
All aftermarket speakers, especially component sets (separate woofers and tweeters), benefit from being fed more power than what a factory or even an aftermarket stereo can put out.
Among a speaker's published specifications you will find its RMS (or "continuous") power rating, usually as a range — "5-60 watts RMS power range" for example. The higher number represents the approximate driving power at which the speaker will play at its fullest and best according to the manufacturer.
Do not exceed the RMS power ratings
- For your speakers, use an amplifier whose top RMS output per channel is no higher than each speaker's top RMS rating.
- For your amplifier, get speakers with top RMS ratings that are equal to or higher than each amp channel's top RMS output.

The Infinity Reference 704a shows that amps can be pretty as well as powerful
So, if you already have aftermarket speakers, find out their top RMS rating. If your front and rear pairs have slightly different power ratings, it's okay — use the lower rating.
How many channels should my amp have?
Each "channel" of an amplifier is a discrete source of power, intended to power one speaker. How many channels you need depends on your plans for your audio system now and in the future.
I'm only powering my speakers
Many people like their music with a strong front stage and don't even use rear speakers. A 2-channel amplifier will be the practical solution when you only need to power a single pair of speakers. But if you like rear-fill sound in your car and want to retain front-to-rear fade control, get a 4-channel amp — one channel for each speaker.
I want to power speakers and a subwoofer
There are some other amp configurations to consider when you want to include a subwoofer in your system. A 3-channel amp can take care of a single pair of speakers plus a sub quite effectively.
A 4-channel amp can also be employed to run a pair of speakers and a sub — two channels bridged together to run the sub and the other two to drive the speakers. This gives you the option for future expansion of your system, allowing you to later change the amp over to run four speakers and add a separate amp for the sub.

JL Audio's HD900/5 five-channel amp can power your front and rear speakers along with a sub.
You may want to consider a 5-channel amplifier that can power your entire system from one convenient and compact package. It's four channels for your speakers, plus a fifth, higher-powered channel for your subwoofer. 6- and 8-channel amps take that all-in-one design and add even more system-building flexibility.
I plan to get new speakers along with my new amp
When building a system from scratch, one of the first questions you should ask yourself is, "How loud do I want this to be?" Car audio systems don't necessarily need massive amounts of amp wattage to sound loud, but having a lot of power available is good for the "headroom" of a system — the ability to deliver an emotionally impactful burst when the music asks for one. There's also the interior size of your vehicle to consider.

A Sound Ordnance M75-4 four-channel amp is an economical way to amplify your system.
How much power does my system need?
If you drive a compact coupe or hatchback, a sports car, or a small-cab pickup, for instance, an amp that's 50-watts RMS per channel, or smaller will probably do fine, overcoming road noises and adding clarity to your music. Look for speakers with a top RMS rating of at least 50 watts RMS to go along with the amp.
For larger vehicles and for those who just want more volume, you should step up to at least a 75 watts RMS per channel setup. A difference of 5 or 10 watts either way won't make any difference and probably can't even be heard. Matching speakers will need to each have a top RMS rating of 75 watts RMS or more.
Those of you who want even greater impact and eye-popping volume out of your system will want to go for an amp with 100 watts RMS or more per channel. Get speakers or component sets that are each rated for at least the top RMS output power of each channel.
I only need an amp for a subwoofer
Bass is much harder to amplify than the rest of the spectrum of sound — that's why there are so many large and beefy subwoofer amplifiers out there dedicated solely to reproducing bass.
"Mono," or single-channel, amps are designed for subwoofers. They'll work with a wide range of impedances, and have tone controls and filters specifically made to help reproduce bass. Although many 2- and 4-channel amps can be bridged to increase their power enough to run a sub, they often then can't handle the sub's low impedance, and overheat or go into protect mode.

Alpine's S-A60M subwoofer amp puts out up to 600 watts RMS for bass.
How much power do I need for a subwoofer?
You want the bass to musically blend and be well-balanced with the rest of your system, so, here's a good rule-of-thumb guide to subwoofer power:
- If you're using your car's factory stereo — 50 to 200 watts RMS of power for the bass will do nicely.
- An aftermarket receiver — you might want 200 to 300 watts RMS of power for your sub.
- Amplified speakers with around 50 watts RMS per channel — plan on 250 to 500 watts RMS for bass
- A 100 watts RMS or higher per channel system — you'll want at least 1,000 watts RMS for your sub.
As with speakers, you'll need to make sure your subwoofer's top RMS rating is equal to or greater than the amp's top RMS output.
You'll also need to impedance match your sub amp and sub. It would be a shame and a waste of money to buy a couple of subwoofers and an amplifier, for instance, only to find out that the amp can't run the subs because wired together, their impedance would be too low for the amp to run without overheating. Remember, if you're adding a sub to a factory system, get a subwoofer amp with speaker-level inputs, so it can get its signal from the factory speaker wires.

Hello, I'm going to be getting 2 TS-SW3001S pioneer subs, the max watts is 1500 and the watts nominal is 400. OHM rating is 4 for each and I was wondering what kind of mono amp would I need for both of these?

Hi I was looking into adding 2 10 inch 4 ohm subwoofers JL Audio 10W0v3-4 frequency response: 25-250 Hz (Peak 600rms per subwoofer) for my 2014 Subaru Legacy. I want a 5 channel amp that way I can provide 50-75rms to the speakers and power the 2 subwoofers. How much power do I need realistically? I'm looking for a more affordable amp if possible but will invest in quality. :)

Hello, I know nothing about amplifiers unfortunately so leaving a comment for some much needed advice. I was gifted a JBL GT4-12 Subwoofer which is 250 Watts RMS at 4 ohms impedance, it has a 1000 W Peak. Im looking for an amplifier to go with it, not looking for anything crazy, just want more bass etc, I just need something which can work well with it nicely. Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

I recently purchased a set of Polk DB6502 Component speakers to replace my front woofers and tweeters, as well as a matching pair of Polk DB652 to replace the rear woofers. If both sets recommend 100 watts continuous, will the 4-channel Soundstream Reserve RS4.1200 amplifier be able to run all of my speakers at 75 watts RMS? I don't need it to get crazy loud.

I have JBL GX608C components that I have not yet installed. Their RMS output is 70 and the impendance is 2.3ohm. The article states to not exceed RMS rating, however the closest I can find are amps that deliver 75 RMS per channel @ 4ohm. Would amp that can do 75 RMS x 4 at 4ohms be okay to use with my 70 RMS, 2.3ohm speakers? I have figured out everything else in regards to upgrading my sound system but am really struggling with the amplifier aspect of it. I do not want to overheat the amp or damage the speakers.

Hilarious response on this board. I provide specs and those are described as "vague & misleading" and somehow a brand name is more relevant. What a joke. Pretty sure if I provided brand name the response is "harumph.... look Rob... brand names don't tell us anything. We need specs...!" A simple question gets a "call our tech support line cha-ching and we'll answer"

Restoring a 74 Dodge Challenger and has a pair of 400 watt RMS (per pair) 6x9 3-ways in the package tray along with a pair of 100 watts RMS (per pair) 4" 2-ways in doors kickers and a lonely 100 watt RMS 4x10 3-way in the dash. I am not adding a subwoofer but would like to add an amp to the mix. What's the proper number of channels needed in an amp to support these speakers? If you answer like my engineer at work ... "it depends" then depends on what? I do want to be able to manage left/right and fade but really main goal is to provide speakers with a bit more power than the Kenwood KMM-BT728HD (22 watts RMS x 4 channels) is sending.

Hey there Buck.. I've been slowly upgrading the system in my Honda Ridgeline over the the last 6 months with my new found time. Ive installed a new pioneer DMH-WT7600NEX head unit, component Polk 6502 in the front doors and coaxial Polk 652 in the rear doors, both 100 RMS @ 4 Ohm. I just received the sub/box that will fit under my back seat perfectly, a JL-Audio-CS110LG-TW3 400w RMS @ 2 Ohms.. my question is would the Kicker-44KXA800-5 channel amp suffice for power? I know the sub would get its max RMS of 400 watts, but it would only power the door speakers at 50RMS. Now I'm not trying to win any bass competitions, but I have a highly eclectic taste in music as a musician myself and I want it to sound as good as possible. Should I get a more powerful amp? I wasn't trying to totally break the bank. Thanks in advance for all you guys do.

I have a 2005 Pontiac GTO that still has the all original sound system; 2 tweeters in the front corners of the dash, 2 6" woofers in the doors, 2 6" co-ax speakers in the rear panels (between the front and rear seats), and 2 6" subs in the rear shelf powered by a very low rated factory amp. I'm on a budget and want to re-use some components from previous vehicles that worked well together. I have a Pioneer P5200HD head unit (50W x 4), an Alpine V12 MRV-100M subwoofer amp powering a 12" Alpine Bass Boost sub (not sure of the specs) in a rectangular enclosure. The trick is, I want to split the 2 rear channels into 4 and replace the rear factory subs with another set of co-ax speakers. I'm assuming I'll need a 4 channel amp to power the rear speakers. Hey Buck, I've got a good one for you, I have a 2003 Honda Element Ex 7 speaker system. So far we have changed the factory headunit to Kenwood's Dmx7705s the subwoofer to kickers 43CWRT672 150W -300, FRONT DOOR To KENWOOD'S Kcfp7100ps component speakers 80watts 280 WATTS PEAK and the rears to kickers 43CSC54 'S 75WATTS RMS 225 PEAK. I have a factory amp supplying 270 watts of power which sounds pretty decent with this system, however I have another kicker sub 43cwrt672 that I'd like to install. So I have build an enclosed can for it, it seems no one makes a 6.75 sub enclosure. My question is , is it possible to pull the subs off my factory amp and let that amp run my speakers and then just install sub amp to power both subs @2 ohms? Or do I have to bypass the factory amp altogether in which case I'd need at least a 5 channel amp. I've been looking for the answer to this puzzle for quite a while. It's very hard to find the true specs to my factory amp. Any thoughts?

Wow this was an eye opener. I'm new to this and looking upgrading the stock speakers in my 2006 Toyota rush with 4 hertz k165 component speakers (70 rms 4 ohms) that I will purchase soon. I currently have a boss bv9358 after market head unit installed. I also have a JL 10w7 subwoofer (750 and 3 ohms) that I intend to include in the set up. My question is what would be the best 4 channel with 2 output to power the 4 hertz and what would be the best mono to power the sub. I don't intend to have the sub on all the time so ill include a switch to power on the mono when I need more boom. Also would I need any additionally accessories like cross overs or equalizer? Thank you and looking forward to you guidance.

"For your speakers, use an amplifier whose top RMS output per channel is no higher than each speaker's top RMS rating. For your amplifier, get speakers with top RMS ratings that are equal to or higher than each amp channel's top RMS output." I thought the amp's RMS should be higher than the speakers'? More powerful speakers strain the amp/less powerful amp would strain the speakers, no? Are there two schools of thought on this?

very well written! Having said that I feel silly needing to ask but I'm still unsure of some things. I'm looking to buy a used car and upgrade the audio system. New head unit, speakers, and adding a sub. I've done simple upgrades in the past but never as far as adding an amp. So if I am looking to add 4 aftermarket speakers and a subwoofer, how many channels does my amplifier need to be? Also, the speakers I'm looking at getting(Hertz Uno X 690) say they handle up to 85 RMS with a peak of 340. What should the amp I buy be rated at?

Hi Buck -- Am in need of some help! I'm attempting to get some more oomph out of the stock 6 speaker setup (NOT Bose) I have in my Nissan Rogue Sport 2017 (no separate amp). Two tweeters in the dash, and what I believe are 2 Front and 2 Rear 2-ways in the door panels. I think the tweeters are 4 ohms and the speakers in the doors are 2 ohms, so am guessing wouldn't benefit from after-market speakers installed without the amp (and it doesn't look like the one 2ohms after-market speaker option are 2-ways anyways so am guessing I would need to add an amp? With the amp, most are 4 channel and the 6 channel ones seem to be a crazy price range so what is my best option if I have 6 speakers in the car? 4 Channel bridge? Would I get enough of a lift to brighten the sound if I added an amp without swapping out the stock speakers or should I replace both? If both, any ideas for speakers that would pair nicely with an amp that's not terribly expensive? Trying to keep the stock head-unit if I can as it's linked with virtually all the settings in the car. Front Door: Size: 6.5 or 6 3/4 Depth: Over 4.5" Mounting Height 0.44 Cut-Out Diameter: 5.075 ? Hi Buck, Great article, albeit still a bit confusing for the novice here! HaHa! I've been working on a system for my 2006 Mini Cooper S... Kenwood KMM-X503 Excelon head unit Kenwood KFC-P710PS Component (80 rms) up front Kenwood KFC-1696PS Rear panels (100 rms) It's my understanding that I can run all of this with a 4 channel amp, but I'm confused about about the amps RMS numbers; (example, 50x4 4ohms) I don't get any of that information. I just want to hook it up and go! LOL Can you recommend a good amp for my setup, preferably in the Kenwood family, so I can avoid all the research? You guys are the specialists! I'll take the recommendation and run with it! I can do the install as I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty! Appreciate your time!

Thanks, Buck. A very helpful article. As a starter, I recently changed the front speakers on my 2015 Mazda CX-5 with Hertz Dieci 165.3 but got disappointed that it didn't improve the sound to my expectations. Will driving them with an amplifier make a difference? I have no plans of upgrading the headunit. My next plan was the Kenwood ksc-sw11 compact powered sub but that may change if I am going to install an amplifier. Thanks again, and more power. Paul

Hello, I have a 2007 Toyota Sequoia with the JBL system. I just made the bad decision (?) to change out the JBL component speakers, front and rear with Infinity Kappa 60CSX's in front and Kappa 62IX's in rear. I believe the voice coil was failing on the front speaker . My head unit is a Pioneer touch screen GPS unit (maybe from 2011) that was inputting the factory JBL amp that is located under the center console. After having the speaker installation completed by a local car stereo shop, the results are less than satisfactory. Old speakers sounded quite a bit better, more bass, louder. To be fair, I was starting to get volume fluctuation and channel bleed before new speakers. I suspect the amp or the head unit could be the culprit? Also, perhaps the more power-hungry Infinity's are finally putting the stock JBL amp to rest? What could be a high quality replacement amp for this situation? Would I be well off to also purchase the Kappa 2" midrange kit to make up for the 3 way front speakers I just did away with? It seems to be difficult to find much info on what people have done to improve their Sequoia factory systems. My understanding (by now after much research), is that monkeying with the JBL stock system is a real quagmire, you have to basically change everything. Well, I guess I'm in it for the speakers and head unit already. Thanks ahead of time!

I also purchased an Alpine S-A60M (600 watts RMS x1 at 2 Ohms) amplifer. It was installed and it makes sound however, the installer said I should really have an amp that "powers 400RMS at 1 Ohm stable". Did I screw up and if so, what amp is best to replace it with. And also have (2) 4" super tweeters rated at 200watt rms @ 4ohm. Do I need a 6 channel? Or would I be okay with a 4 channel? This is going into a 1978 Toyota pickup with an aftermarket Headunit which I haven't decided on yet. Could you recommend me an amp or 2 to power all those speakers? Thank you!

Hi I have a 2012 Kia optima ex no infinity system I just upgraded to a aftermarket head unit atota a6 deck , I then replaced the door speakers with Rockford fosgate prime 6.75 in all 4 doors and also put in 3.5 in Rockford fosgate punches in the front dash where stock tweeters were. I was not getting enough power so I purchased a used Rockford fosgate 2 channel p2002 amplifier . My first question is when wireing the front speaker to the amp can I use the front dash speaker wire and will that power both front door and dash speaker I think they are both on the same wire that goes to the head unit I only ask because I cannot get the clip removed where the wire run threw the front door . Secound question is since this is a two channel amplifier I am confused on the RCA outputs my head unit has like 8 different options to out them in and so far I have my rear speakers wired to the amp and sometimes it puts way to much power to the speakers and sounds cracked and awful and if I switch the Rcas around it sounds better for awhile then acts up again . I guess I am confused on how to wire the speakers and Rcas correctly on a 2 channel amplifier and cannot find any videos online that are for 2 channel amp with no subwoofer powering just aftermarket door speakers and tweeters . Thanks a lot !

when calculating an rms rating for a component set of 2 6x9s and 2 tweaters with crossovers, does the rms include all 4 speakers or just the woofer and tweeter in pairs. for example in a component set with an rms rating of 125 at a 2 ohm load does that mean about 60 watts for each side equaling 120 watts total or 125 for both sides equaling out to 250 watts in total? and does the 2 ohm load need to be 2 ohms on the amp? i have a 4 channel amp that can do 125 at 4 ohms bridged giving me 2 channels at 125 and it can do 60x4 at 2 ohms what would be the better option?

The speakers are rated at top rms of 150 each(300w rms a pair) and tweeters that are rated at 80rms each(160w rms a pair) both the speakers and tweeters are 4 ohms does this mean I need an amplifier that can supply around 230rms at 2 channels in order to supply the speakers with enough power to play at their best? Thanks for the input on the output hahaha could I am in electronics technician. RF basically. I would also add to your information, which is very good, that people should not mistake the package consumption for output. A lot of people will say to me, "on the back of my stereo, it says 500 watts." Wrong! That's what it consumes. And that's ac value. The mainstream consumer has no idea what RMS is. Thanks for putting that to light for many folks.

Hello Buck, I have a couple of brand new (old stock) US Acoustics usx-4085 & 2150 i bought there many years ago. I want to use the 4085 (4ch amp) to run my old school Boston Acoustics RC620 Components w/ Imaging tweeters. Amp is underrated at 85w per channel and Boston Components I believe 80-85watts and My Alpine S-S69's are 85watts. Sounds like a perfect match all together. I need a little advice in turning/setting up this amp to maximize high fidelity sound and smooth clarity. I also have a really nice CDT Audio Components 6.5" i used in my previous car as a back up in cases the Boston are too big to fit but with a little modification and spacer they should fit fine. I really want rock those Bostons and want to ensure i get that classic Boston Acoustics sound quality.

Yes Buck I don't really know anything about any of this at all so I may not be explaining thing's correctly. I'm pretty sure the tweeter's came with crossovers I assume to go with two of the 6.5" to make them component speaker's. But other then that I'm just going off of what the guy at the shop that I was going to have install everything at. And I do think I heard him say something about crossovers which he said we would discuss at look at my options when I actually go there to have it installed. And he is an authorized and licensed dealer and installer for the products that I have and is the one that said the Pdx-v9 is enough to push everything. I just wanted a second and very reliable and reputable man's opinion to make sure everything is done correctly since I have absolutely zero knowledge in this field as I made obvious when I asked about the power source upgrade. I'm sorry for wasting you're time on such miniscule questions but could you by chance tell me what I need to make it work with those speaker's and thePdx -v9 amp. that you were mentioning. I'm in the process of installing Focal ISS 165 component speakers in the front factory locations of my 2012 Hyundai Elantra. The tweeters and woofers are essentially treated as separate speakers with in-line crossovers... what is the best way to amp these? Would running them in parallel be safe (my amp is stable down to 2 ohm, so my worry is over the speakers themselves)? Or should I run the woofers off two channels of my four channel amp (rear channels are currently bridged to power a 10" sub) and the tweeters off my headunit (Pioneer AVH-4000nex)? The third option is giving the woofers and tweeters their own channel. How much power would you supply to these tweeters (relative to the woofers)? My amp is old and I plan on replacing it (Sony XM-ZR604)...So what type of amp(s) should I purchase? An amp with more channels so each speaker (sub included) has its own channel (5,6, or 8 channel amp-flexibility to add rear door speakers later)? Or should I purchase a 4-6 channel amp for the door speakers and a separate mono amp? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Help.... I had a Kicker 43CXA600.1 amp to run my IDMAX 10" subwoofer. This sub is a rec rms of 500W and 1000W max rms. [Link removed] My amp died and so I bought a PIONEER GM-D9701 amp. My speaker definitely does not sound anywhere near as good as with the kicker amp. Is this amp too powerful? I have tried multiple wiring configurations. This speaker is dual 4 ohm - is this somehow not ideal for the pioneer amp? I have the speaker wired to use both coils. So i guess this 4 ohm is now 8 ?? not sure. I am not a speaker/amp expert and am confused as to why the sound is no good. I'm not sure if its distortion or reverberation. I have played with gains and other settings on the amp and it gets much worse when I turn them up. I guess my question is what is the major difference between this amp and my previous kicker amp that could be causing this sound difference. Thank you.

Replacing the audio components in my 08 Dodge Ram reg.cab. I have the head unit replaced with a Kenwood ddx672bh. I have the Fosgate 2- P1692 rms 75w and 2 - P152 rms 40w that I'm ready to install. The head unit is rated at max power of 50w x 4 with FBP @ 22w x 4 @ 4 ohm. Would an amplifier be needed to power those speakers? I will be adding a sub, fosgate P2D48 rms 250w @ 4 ohm. Powered with a fosgate R500x1D. But if I should need to amp the other 4 speakers I would be looking for a 5 channel amp. Any suggestions?

Hello Buck! I have a pair of Massive Audio MK6A components and an Addictive Audio 10.4 amp. The amp does 115x4 @4ohm and 170x4 @2ohm. The MK6As are 150 RMS and 300 Max. Am I safe to use this amp being as its under the RMS by 35 watts? I also have an Addictive Audio 250.1 amp that is obviously overkill for them and meant for subs, but could that be an option if say the 10.4 model is TOO under-powered? Thanks a bunch!

Hello. I have a 2001 Boxster S with factory Nav (2 DIN), 2 front speakers (2 speakers in each), 2 rear speakers (2 speaker each side) and 2 Door "Sub" speakers. It has a Harmon AES DSP Amp in the front trunk. Without busting the bank account, what would you recommend? I was leaning toward a Kenwood DDX97005S. Can the existing amp be used with that or any similar models? If not, what would be the minimum amp requirement be? Thank You!

Hi, Crutchfield. I have a technical issue with two different setups that I'm looking at now and that I was really hoping that you could steer me to the right direction. Also, a clarification on your article would be appreciated (if I don't use up the allotted maximum number of characters). So please bear with me. Setup 1: 100wRMS Component Speakers (front) + 60wRMS Coaxial Speakers (rear) Setup 2: 100wRMS Component Speakers (front) + 40wRMS Coaxial Speakers (rear) With your 75%-150% Rule stated in your article above, but disregarding any brand preferences, what would be the MAXIMUM Power of a 4-Channel Amplifier that would make the setup sound really good, crisp, and clear, but would not damage the speakers at the back? Setup 1: 100wRMS = 75w (75%); 150w (150%) 60wRMS = 45w (75%); 90w (150%) From the parameters given above, the intersecting/common values would be from 75w to 90w. I know that I could still use an amplifier that puts up to up to 90wRMS (i.e., 150% of 60wRMS but 90% of the 100wRMS). But, how about for the second setup? Using your 75%~150% rule would not give an intersecting/common values. Setup 2: 100wRMS = 75w (75%); 150w (150%) 40wRMS = 30w (75%); 60w (150%) With that in mind, using a 60w amplifier would be too small to drive the components at the front; but, if I choose a 75w amplifier, I'm afraid that that would damage the speakers at the back. Music preferences are acoustic, folk/country, and pop BUT, would sometime play

Heman, A little-understood spec is a speaker's SPL rating. It's a measure of a speaker's efficiency, how loud it should play when fed a 1-watt signal and measured from a meter away. The only recommendation we make is that the smaller your amplifier, the larger you'll want the speaker/sub's SPL rating to be.
-
Heman from Miami, Fl, USA
Posted on 5/26/2018
at the rated 50-200 W for a subwoofer, what SPL rating would you recommend for a speaker? Eg: It makes a huge difference if the subwoofer is a 6" with 87dB SPL driven by 50W, vs a 12" 103dB SPL speaker driven by 200W

Kaiden, Power your front and rear speakers with a 4-channel amp. Then, when you get two more speakers, get a 2-channel amp to power them. And a mono amp can definitely power two subs, just get one strong enough to handle both.

What amp set up would I need if I want to power 4 speakers, a possibility of 6 and add 2 subs. I've got an 89 Chevy k1500 and I've got Kicker 43DSC4604 4x6, 2 in front and 2 in back. I might add an addition pair of speakers in the kicker panels, but I for sure want to add 2 subs. If I don't add the addition 2 speakers, and have only 4 speakers and 2 subs what channel amp or amps would I need? And is a monoblock amp capable of powering 2 subs? Also what channel amp or amp would I need if I add those 2 additional speakers onto the speakers and the 2 subs? I pretty much know how to deal with wattage but I don't know how to choose the correct channel amp.

Delturon, When your sub amp hits hard, it's trying to draw as much as 200 amperes of current from your vehicle's electrical system. As the amp strains to get that unobtainable amount of current, its power supply voltage drops, and the amp goes into protect mode. I think if you want it that loud, you'll have to upgrade your vehicle's alternator.

Arthur, Power specs for speakers are confusing and meant as guidelines to prevent abuse and un-warrantied repairs. Your new speakers will work well with the 50 watts RMS they'll each be getting. The good news is that if that proves to be not loud enough for your tastes, you can upgrade the amp to a 100 watts RMS per channel amp. You control the amount of power each speaker gets with the receiver's volume, balance, and fade controls.

Rodrigo, You can use Y-cords to get four amp inputs from two receiver outputs, but you'll lose the front-to-rear fader function. A better way is to get a 4-channel amplifier that has a pair of preamp outputs. You'd connect the front and rear RCA outputs of the receiver to the 4-channel amp and then run a RCA pair from the preamp outs to your sub amp's inputs.

Charles, Four DVC 4-ohm subs can only get wired together as an 8-ohm, 32-ohm, a 0.5-ohm, or a 2-ohm load. A cool and economical amp is Kicker's CXA1200.1, which will put out 1200 watts RMS total, 300 to each sub, wired to your subs like this. Most mono, 1-channel amplifiers have 2 speaker output terminals that are wired together inside the amp. The second speaker output terminal is there for convenience and if you hook a speaker to each terminal it would result in the two speakers being wired in parallel, cutting the total impedance in half.

Ok Buck. I have four American bass VFL 8D4 subs. I call them my little monsters. They are 800 watt max, 400 watt rms each, DVC 4 ohm. I know I can run them at a 0.5, 2 ohm and I believe 8 ohm. I'm running a 160 amp alternator in my 03 Tahoe. I made a four hole box out of 3/4 MDF, .73 cubic feet per sub tuned to 37 Hz. My issue is what amp should I get? I kinda want to run 2 ohm mono but I see a lot of mono amps with 2 speaker outputs. If I wire two subs in parallel can I put 2 subs on one output each at 1 ohm? Or will the amp get a lower ohm if I do that?

Hi Buck. I recently bought a car with a low quality system in it. Today I upgraded the rear 6x9's with a pair of good quality Pioneer 3 way speakers. (I chose 6x9 because the holes were already cut in the parcel shelf). However, when I play music, there is no bass coming out of them - unless I alter the L-R balace to left side, or right side, then the bass kicks in nicely. But I cannot have bass on equal L-R balance. The head unit is a cheap no name system, and there is no amp installed. Is this the reason behind the issue? It can't handle the output to supply both 6x9 at the same time? Ideally I don't want to install an amp, I don't know how to, and I am not after massive bass. If I upgraded the head unit to a quality brand, would this solve my problem? Cheers Tom

Aaric, Two single voice coil (SVC) 8-ohm subwoofers rated at 200 watts RMS each will work best with an amplifier that can put out between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 4 ohms. Not knowing exactly what amplifier or subwoofers you have make it impossible to give advice about them, though. If you want a question answered about your system, you must identify the equipment by brand names and model numbers.

Jon, If you like the way your system sounds, I don't see why you need to change a thing. That amplifier will drive those speakers and tweeters just fine - it won't mind the 2.67-ohm loads.

Pls advise if there is a need to change. Thanks a lot...

John, That amp will be fine for your speakers as long as you set the amp gain so no distortion ever plays. If you decide to add a subwoofer or two to your system, I recommend getting a separate subwoofer amplifier. Otherwise you'd lose all balance and fade controls for your different speakers, if you ran four speakers off the front two channels of the amp and the subs from the rear channels bridged.

I have 2 pcs front door speakers (Polk Audio DB652 DB+, 100W RMS 300W peak) and 2 pcs rear door speakers (JBL GT7-6 6.5" 2-Way, 45W RMS 135W peak). If I will use 4 ch amp PIONEER GM-D8604, is there any technical conflict to the JBL speakers since the RMS value of the amplifiers is more than twice? Also, if ever i will use my 2 pcs (or 1 pc) Pioneer Subs (TS-W259S4, 10 inch 1200W max 50-350W RMS) what will be the set-up of the coaxial speakers using the same PIONEER GM-D8604 amps? Really appreciate your reply. Thank you sir.

Sam, A great solution for your situation would be a JL Audio MX600/3, capable of sending 75 watts RMS to your front speakers and 400 watts RMS to your subs.

I wanna add 4 65 RMS door speakers and 2 10 inch 4-ohm 200 watt RMS to my truck. What would a good amp be to power all of them? Or would it be better to get one amp for the door speakers and one for the subs?

Suresh, I think you may want to look into getting two sets of component speakers, each consisting of a pair of matching tweeters and woofers with a crossover. Each set would require one channel of amplification for a tweeter and a woofer. For front and rear speakers, that would require a 4-channel amplifier. If you want to add a subwoofer, you can either add a mono 1-channel sub amp, or start with a 5-channel amplifier. I don't know what car stereo equipment or even what model vehicles are available in your country, so I can't give you a recommendation.

Hello, I have Alpine′s 6" SPS-610-C (80W) and 6x9 SPE-6090 (75W) . I need an amplifier for these, is the Alpine KTP-445U good enough for my setup? Or should I get a better one? I also plan on getting a Subwoofer, can you recommend any to pair with my speakers? Two amplifiers or one for all? Thank you so much!

A little help... I have Sony XAV AX100 aftermarket headset in the car now singing on 4 factory speakers. I like to convert it into a component sound set up... 4 mid range speakers (70 RMS each) of 6", 2 or 4 tweeters (value not decided yet) and a subwoofer of 12" with some 300-500 RMS value. My doubts are: 1. Can I use the amp Sony XM-GS4 4channel amp for the 3 level (sub, woofer, tweeter) component sound set up? 2. If the amp is too inadequate can I add a second amp (mono) of 500 RMS to move the subwoofer? 3. Then remains the tweeter. How can I include the tweeters in the amplification process? Can I do the first 2 tweeters a parallel combination with the front speakers and the other 2 tweeters with the back door speakers ? Will this step reduce the front/back speaker's power output? Is it safe for the tweeter as well?

Hello, I have a 2003 Honda S2000, I would like to upgrade the stock speakers to JL Audio C3-600. Also I'm pairing that with a JL Audio 12W3v3-4 Subwoofer. What amplifier setup should I run? Single or dual amp? I would like to stick with one brand.

So, I've got this JBL GTO-501EZ amp. I'm about to buy JBL GT5-2402BR subwoofer. So this subwoofer works on 2 ohms and has 550w RMS; this amp I have will give 500w RMS if connected to a 2 ohms subwoofer. I've seen a one and only review on Youtube, that guy showed us this amp's power goes above 500w RMS (tested with SMD Amp Dyno, both 2 & 4 ohms impedance). Is this amp perfect for this subwoofer?

David, Not knowing exactly what subwoofers you have make it impossible to recommend an amplifier for them. Subs don't have two different RMS power ratings. If you want a question answered about a system, you must identify the equipment by brand names and model numbers.

Devin, How to power twelve drivers depends on where they are in the vehicle, which can be wired together and which can't without losing balance/fade function, and what their nominal power ratings are. Dailami, You probably will not hear the background noise of an amplifier with a signal-to-noise ratio of 75 dB over the road and wind noises your vehicle generates. Likewise, you probably won't hear any differences between amplifiers with super-high-frequency responses. Most multi-channel amplifiers have input selector switches so that a 2-channel input accommodates 4- or 6-channel outputs, for example.

Chet, You should never use peak specifications when planning a system - only use RMS ratings. Rockford Fosgate Punch P1 subwoofers are rated for 250 watts RMS each. Without knowing their impedances (ohms), I can't tell you what amp would work best for them. I can tell you that a 2-channel amp with an output of 900 peak watts probably won't.

Is a signal to noise ratio of 75db acceptable in a car amplifier? Would an amp with a frequency response of up to 50 Khz sound better and clearer than another one with up to 35KHz? as far as I know, human hearing reaches 20KHz only, so is the rest an overkill? and lastly I have a 2 channel output on my playback device, can I use RCA splitters to feed 4 or 6 channels to an AMP?

Roger, A web search shows me at least two online car audio dealers in the UK that sell 5-channel amplifiers, but then I don't exactly know your definition of a "moderate price." If you're looking for a separate amp for that sub - it'll sound best with one that can put out between 188 and 375 watts RMS at 4 ohms, like a Pioneer GM-D8601.

Hello Buck, I have a Kenwood KDC-X7000 DAB, two pairs of JBL GX862 speakers and I will be adding a amp and subwoofer(JL Audio CP108LG). My question is can I get away with adding a small compact amp for the four speakers and a mono amp for the 8 inch sub? Moderate price 5 channel amps are hard to find where I am currently located(UK). I am currently looking at the Pioneer GM-D8604 and possibly a mono amp. Which amps would you recommend? This is for a 2003 Ford Focus.

Kyle, A single DVC 2-ohm subwoofer rated for 1400 watts RMS will sound best with an amp that can put out between 1050 and 2100 watts RMS into one ohm, like a Memphis Audio PRX1500.1.

Ed, A speaker's RMS power rating tells you more about what amp not to get than what amp to get. In your case you shouldn't get an amplifier more powerful than about 120 watts RMS per channel. In other words, almost any 4-channel car amplifier will work. If you're just looking for some sound reinforcement, maybe a compact Clarion XC1410, 50 watts RMS per channel amp will do. Or if you like it loud, check out Pioneer's GM-D8604 at 100 watts RMS per channel.

Zach, Any speaker that will fit in your car will work with that receiver. Unfortunately, the 1968 Camaro has not been researched by our Product Researchers, so you'll have to measure the mounting holes yourself for size and depth to see if an aftermarket speaker will fit or not. It might be best to look at a Retrosound replacement speaker for the dash location.

That was a typo on my part. I meant the new kxa series not zxa. I have a custom enclosure for my car and the rest of the wires I will get from the installer when I get everything installed. Just waiting for someone to carry the amp I desire. Thank you very much for the input about the amp though, that was my biggest concern. Didn't want to overpower and destroy them.

Jonathan, I don't know about the model Kicker amp you mention, but if it's like their CXA and KXA series amplifiers it'll put out 1200 watts RMS at 2 ohms. Your subs will be fine as long as you set the amp gain properly and avoid playing distortion. For your installation, in addition to the subwoofers and amplifier, you'll need a subwoofer enclosure or box, a 4-gauge amplifier wiring kit, some speaker wire, and a couple of RCA-to-bare-wire adapters to get speaker-level signal to the amplifier's inputs. Why don't you give us a call so an Advisor can help you get everything you need for your setup.

Keith, It is perfectly okay to mix brands of gear in a system. Even without hearing the results, I think the equipment you've chosen will sound excellent together. Just be sure, if you're installing the amplifier yourself, to set the front, rear, and subwoofer channels' gain so no distortion ever plays.

I am planning on installing 4 new speakers (2 components: Polk DB6501 and 2 coaxials: JBL GTO638) and one 10" subwoofer (JL 10tw3-d4) in my 2015 Nissan Frontier. I am trying to be somewhat budget friendly between $700-900, but I still want to get a good quality system for all types of music. My main concern is whether the 5 channel amplifier I picked out (Pioneer GM-D9605) will power the whole system properly for casual listening. Also, is it okay to mix and match the brands of each component the way I have? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

M, If you plan on those rear subs being Kicker CWRT81s, then they will together want an amplifier that can send them around 600 watts RMS at 1- or 4-ohms, while your front subs will work best with about 300 watts RM\S at 2-ohms. The only amp I know of that can do both (approximately) is a Helix Competition A2, which could send 270 watts RMS to the front subs and 395 watts RMS to the rears. A less expensive solution would be to get a couple of Rockford Fosgate P500X1bd mono subwoofer amps.
